Regati is a celebration of the creatve and community spirit that resides in all of us.
Every part of Regati is creative: The costumes, the legends, the songs and the customs. We need the customs created by Regati Day. Whatever doesn't make it in time, well, we'll use it next year.
There are three general Regati customs:
A Regati party is fundamentally a costume party.
However, Regati is about being creative, and that goes way beyond wearing a costume. Make it your day to write a story or a poem. Make a joke. Draw a picture. Build something. Anything. Then share it with the people in your life.
It's all up to you. The suggestion is there to encourage people to make their costume in conjunction with tapping their creativity. You may be surprised with what you can come up with yourself.
It's to encourage the creative spirit. If you wear the same costume, it's not too creative, is it?
Regati is the third Saturday in January. This is different than the original date of January 20 (the first modern Regati was held on January 20, 1996), which doesn't always fall on a Saturday, and can occasionally conflict with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
You may have noticed that after New Year's Day people get into a sort of post-holiday funk. There's no major holidays for quite some time after that. Regati is three weeks after New Year's, which gives people three weeks to look forward to a cool party, and after that, Groundhog Day and Valentine's Day aren't too far off.
